well she looked good from far,but was far from good!!..lol.
knda sorta was juz going to put on bumpers,as this narrow ran great..as can be seen though the previous owner(a fisherman)..used tools at hand chisel, old lic plates ect..lol. to make it go..it does have a rear end that i did fall in luv with though..lol..so thats a good start!!
...I have an overlord on this project....and he has forgotten more about bombardiers than i'll probally ever know....this bombardier will have him to thank in the end for the rework,as he is a wizard at his craft!!....and to be brutally honest..I would have put on the bumpers and being playing in the snow!!
will try to keep posting pics as progress continues.
kpm
-
Sure glad this secret is out, now for the fun!
-
lol..and for the record viking,I'm not trying to be mean to the fisherman...as u seen in the picture he was pretty handing with tha chisel on that finishing work above the diff axcel..!!
kpm
-
Before you reinstall that antique plywood, check out this site. "allnoisecontrol.com" (many others to). Some slick ideas for cabin noise control before the velour interior/dingle balls finish it off. Keep the picnic basket out front and attach a marine BBQ for the Cranberry Portage Rally!
-
hmm I sure won't need that bbq at the rally...they feed u really well there!!!..
.... got a fair bit done again today, will send ot some pics to post tommorow.
eveything is getting reworked from front to back....and I mean everything..lol...it's starting to add up!!

By the looks of things you have lots of room to move around & do repairs comfortably. KPM how's the motor/trans... are you using it again ?? Your making improvements to her. Keep it up.
The Old Trucker
-
It's nice to those 'hammer and chisel' holes getting cleaned up. The fellow that put the radio in mine looked like he used a hammer and nails for the speaker grill, and a can opener to make the hole for the radio.
-
well first off, thats Gary putting in a new heater motor(HE'S THE WIZARD)....yes even though when I bought it the motor, tranny diff, all were fine..Gary wants to rebuild them,so we will,...he does not cut corners, and I like his style, and ot ur right there's a lot of room in his shop....we will be taking a break as I have an operation coming up...which will give me time to buy some of the new things we need...Dave some of the people seemed to use what ever they had...this narrow had truck springs jury rigged in...not to mention the license plates again...lol..
every piece going in from the front to back will be new or rebuilt!!!
kpm
-
.this narrow had truck springs jury rigged in...not to mention the license plates again...lol..
every piece going in from the front to back will be new or rebuilt!!!
kpm
TRUCK SPRINGS ?? In a narrow.... Any pics of it ???
HUH ??... says OT.
-
ot
in the first pic u can see part of the spring,it was set same as bombardier spring..except bolted in on the bottom, truck spring as in coil, not leaf.
kpm
-
Will you install a plastic belly pan? Tremendous improvement skating through slush.
-
...that's food for thought ,what do you suggest Dave??
kpm
-
It sounds like a logical idea. Maybe a light 1/8" or so pop riveted underneath to the steel pan would be beneficial. I have yet to find out a bombardier limitations, let alone even driving in slush, but I'm sure this spring I'll get my chance.
-
Something softer than puck board, it cracks exponentially in the real cold. Laird Plastics on 8 Plymouth, Winnipeg could maybe steer you to something that would remain pliable in severe temps. This narrow gauge your working on would be invincible with the added option. Is there something under your skis presently?
-
now your being modest!!!...I know a secret remember..uh huh.
kpm
-
yup Dave
puck board under them now.....will be buying new ski's (complete)..legs ect..not sure if i'll go with anything under them at this time.
i'm trying to recoup from my operation ...not feeling good at all!!
kpm
-
Hey KPM..... Who's the pretty looking young woman standing along side this bomber ?? ;)
http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/theoldtrucker/KPM1164.jpg
KPM. is this machine yours too...
OT.
-
....that would be my mom....and I believe at that time the bank still owned it..lol.
kpm
-
I like the rain gutter over the door idea. Helps keep a feller dry... 8) ;) OT.
-
East there OT, remember your ticker.... :D
-
wow that 74 looks nice some more pics of that one would be nice to see, what is the chassis number on that bomber?
-
i'll send ot a couple more pics to post of the 74 and look at the # for u.

Hello Kyle
Now that is a very nice wide guage you have now. This is a machine that is ready for the trail.
What mods have been done to this engine.
We would like to start planning what we would like to do to the engine in our 1974 when we go to rebuild it.
Any comment would be welcome.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Ray
-
TY Ray
merry christmas to you and yours..
the 318 industrail is balanced and blue printed(factory)...with polished and ported 360 heads, steel crank forged pistons..high lift cam ect....with the 4 bbl intake...I cannot tale credit for it though...this machine belonged to Gary McLean, and as you know he does not cut corners,it has the best of everything...the main reason I bought it!!
....I have a STRONG feeling you may have to get further info in the near future from our friend Peter,as he has shown a strong interest in this machine....that would make 7 in his collection ..I think..
.....and for the record I sure like my 58,the one you saw last year...and have this narrow on the go.
maybe I should buy that wide from you guys and free up some of your time!!..lol..
kpm
-
Hello Kyle
How is the Narrow Bombardier rebuild coming along. It looks like your helper is no green horn around Bombardiers.
Between the two of you fellows we would expect to see a rebuild that is better than it was from the factory.
No our 1974 is not for sale,we hope to give it the big rebuild when we can get at it. We would like to do much like has been done to your recent purchase.
Our 74 is a low mileage machine that has sat a lot in the weather.
We are trying to get our 1952 in to the shop to service up to get ready to go to our north cabin. When we started it this year it seams to have a stuck valve lifter. What causes this in a low hour rebuild. I think there is only 100 plus hours since a full rebuild on the Ford 300.
Ray
-
..well Ray
sometimes the 300 will drain oil from one lifter...sometimes you can cure it easy..just pour tranny fluid down the carb while running...most times this will free it up.....if not you will have to take off the side panel(where the lifter is stuck)..and the valve cover....first try tighten up the lifter...the little bolt on top..if it dos'nt free itself then just replace it with a new one....hope this helps..
.....as for my narrow....let's juz say i'm the apprentice..lol..when we are done though you can check it out...if you like what you see....we'll start on yours!!!.....
happy new year
kyle
ps i'd like to go up to the cabin with you and Paul sometime!!!
-
......update...motor is done....top to bottom...one more coat of paint and she's ready to hook up...tranny(C6) is also done...have to do the diff yet...brake set up is made and ready to install....still doing metal fabrication....steering rods ect...it will be a long while yet...before she see's the snow....
kpm
-
And here are the pics to show he is still making progress...

When are you going to grace the bomber gang with a picture of yourself? Please try not to block the view of the narrow though! ;D
-
Now VIKING... I don't to get want my computer screwed up with a virus. ha ha ha
OT.
-
clothes on ..off how do you want this picture???...lol..
kpm
-
Well KPM you owe me a new computer. Mine just went caput. That pic has done it...
http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/theoldtrucker/KPM1014.jpg
me with 1958 narrow...clothes on..lol.
kpm
-
KPM, Before you install the Ford, check out Steyr Diesel Motors. They have a sweet six pack just made for a narrow. Stateside and with the Can.$ would it would be a steal.
-
...it's gong to be the 300...it's just all been rebuilt,as well as transmission(c6)and 1 ton diff...I should be getting around 180hp...I personally dislike the diesel in a bombardier
kpm
-
I've got the same feeling about the Ford that I have, living with it for now.
-
Kyle
What are you using for a fan on this Ford 300 engine.
We could not seem to fine just the right fan when we did our rebuild which may be causing us some problems.
Any comments on the best fan would be welcome. I wonder if any one is running a fan shroud on the narrow guage machines. The say the performance of the fan is optimized by using a shroud.
Ray
-
Cletis with the original fan working right do you usually get a lot of snow build up, outside around the rad ?? I was talking to a couple of people & they sorta think with all the snow flying around there it cuts down on the performance of the rad.
A J5 has the engine enclosed & has a fan that blows air out through the rad. I wonder if that would work here ?? Wouldn't that keep the engine temp down & help any?? Just a thought...
OT.
-
Ray
i'm using a 5 blade flex blade fan,use of a shroud does optimze cooling...
kyle
-
Ray
The 6 core rads we talked about would fit right in and the extra thickness is not toward the fan, but to the rear which might be a problem with the 300 set up.
-
Cletus, Find flex-a-lite.com, look for the 4600 series fan/20" to 24". Lots of pitch and comes with multiple bolt patterns. I'm using this model on my 300ci ford six, works well. An option to consider. Interlake Auto (Bruce) in Arborg, Mb. did the leg work for me. Good luck. D.O.
-
Viking
Thanks for the lead on the fan.
I looked up the Flex-a-lite Model you indicated and it looks like something one should use. Do you use any kind of shroud on your machine. Cranman pointed out that we should look at going to a 6 core radiator. Once we pull our failed engine it will give us a chance to measure things up to fit in these 2 items.
Thank you for the help.
Ray
-
Cletus, I use a six core rad without the shroud, I think it would make a big difference to include it. KPM might have more experience though.
A nifty cooling retrofit at home here has a marine background. The keel cooler concept under boats has been copied on a Narrow Gauge with the 300ci Ford Six.
With the original radiator in place, a splice was created and 3/16's boxed steel used. With a return loop, it is mounted underneath along the drivers side with cooling fins attached.
The 13 litre capacity became 28 litres and runs a 195 thermostat. Works sweet! There are probably many applications to the idea, adding coolant capacity under load is the ticket every time.
This unit is away currently at work and will be nearby this March. I can provide a phone # if you like and will post pictures when it returns.

well the diff has been rebuilt, and put back in as well as the motor and tranny.Gary fabricated an exhaust and heat sheild..to keep direct heat away from the starter.New motor and tranny mounts were also made,as well asmetal covers for the sides of the diff, and a lift out slide plate for starter acess.
The disc brake is machined and fabricated into place...we are beefing up the drive shaft a little and will be putting it back in this week. The new bushings have been installed on the axcel's as well as new boogies and chains. The new sprockets are on.
New fuel pump starter water pump distributor, cap rotor wire, plugs, carbrator, fan belt ,alternator..and mounting bracket.
...new wiring will begin soon too..lol..I hope..will add more info as progress is made!!!

ANOTHER FANTASTIC UPDATE FROM KPM.
Here is his email.
hi claude
keep plugging away everyday...today had the whole crew working!!
..it's not hard to put mega hours in when doing a rebuild on a bombardier...gotta luv it!!!
....some people question the cost of these machines(when done right)..it's easy to sink the money into them, then factor in your time..lol..you better have a passion for i!!
Gary keeps it all in perspective, which makes the job go smooth...like i've said before he's the wizard...had dashes made up by D.PAULSON of WADENA STEEL...the man does an excellant job...course you can see that by looking at the awesome job he has done on his wide gauge rebuild....hoping to drive this narrow at the rally!!!
take care my friend

Kyle, Take a look at the remote oil filter kits. Make things pretty tidy during the oil changes.
-
Dave
we had checked them out,and decided to go with the stubby filter...made up a funnel type thingy..lol.for the oil to run into.
...less hoses to contend with..
kpm
-
Well Kyle, it's plain to see what you've been spending your time at this winter. Now I understand why I haven't seen you out wheeling n' dealing on bombers this past few months. lol
You are going to have one fine machine when you are done. Sounds like you are going over it and sparing no shortcuts in her rebuild. Good work and also good job on getting Claude post your progress; otherwise he'd probably get himself into some sort of trouble.
Keep it up there Kyle.
-
...thanx Gary.....

..as u can see by the picture we work according to Manitoba safety standards!!!
lol...kpm

Kyle what did you use for insulation ? Some sort of spray on type ??? OT.
-
well the diff has been rebuilt, and put back in as well as the motor and tranny.Gary fabricated an exhaust and heat sheild..to keep direct heat away from the starter.New motor and tranny mounts were also made,as well asmetal covers for the sides of the diff, and a lift out slide plate for starter acess.
kpm
KPM when you rebuilt your diff can you tell me what parts you needed & what place you got them ? I need what they call a nest kit. (spider gears) for mine. Also Glen's newbuild needs the same thing. My diff is smaller than Glen's.
Here is mine. http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/theoldtrucker/DSCF0373.jpg
Here is Glen's. http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/theoldtrucker/PICT0850.jpg
-
..i used strofoam 1''...and foam insulation to seal it in...
.....my diff is a 1 ton ...newer dodge.....and I bought my parts from piston and ring in wpg. mb...
.....grfishmaker bought a new factory diff from me for a narrow...i'm not sure he would want to sell...as he has 2 narrows of this own...and 2 wides for the record..
kpm

Would you have a phone ### for those guys ?? OT.

And the new colour?
-
well Dave..i saw ur narrow at dans...nice little machine...as for more pics and colour..well..i'm rushing and dont think we'll have it ready for the rally...it will be close!!!...sooo...no time for photos...besides..its fun to be a little provocative...
kpm
-
I'll wait for the painted version! One thing for sure, bombers look good in any colour. As for my narrow, mechanically sound, needs some outer skin though. Thanks for taking the the time to look.
-
KPM, One or two pictures of the front suspension upgrade in the next posting. Your new and improved version could be the future here, especially with the rough terrain I deal with daily.
-
..Dave
give me a call at home(evening)..and i'll go over with u what was done..

Just pulling your chain Kyle, I hope you have the great unveiling at the rally this weekend. Good luck.
All the best from The Old Trucker
-
thnx Claude...and DAVE..
i'm not 100 percent ready...lol...bout 75...though i'm thinking i'll be able to take the narrow there....had to resand and paint...today...and will have to again after the rally...fine for now though..I suppose it is what it is..lol...few little gliches to work through after the rally...lol.. .thats what I get for wanting quality work on a VERY limited budget and a VERY tight schedule..lol.
...i'll take many pictures there for u to post Claude...
kpm
-
As requested by a fine upstanding member of this group, I present KPM'S latest project. He said to wait till this evening to post it. So here we go....
http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/theoldtrucker/100_2732.jpg
-
Geez, she got a fair sparkle on her skin now. The windows in the doors look new. Are they new or cleaned up ?
-
..everything on this narrow is new or reworked...the doors are new skins the glass is all new...front to back she has been gone through...
.....the rally was awesome as usual I counted 25 bombardiers...the going was tough slugging as the snow was deep and sugar type....couple of people had machine trouble unfortunately...one had a broken track the other a blown frost plug...
kpm
-
Here's another pic of his masterpiece
http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/theoldtrucker/KPM1315.jpg

.....thnx Claude
i'm happy with the end results of 54...none of it would have happend without the insight and hard work of my my great friends Gary&Bruce McLean, and my partner Liette..and son Konr..one could not wish for better people.
I also have to thank my buddies Pete Dunlop, and David Paulson....David made the dash for me.and Pete was always willing to pitch in and help whenever I asked...i'm proud to have such awesome people to share with!!
a humble kpm
-
KPM, Where did the driver/passenger door windows get purchased?
-
KPM. I want to know too, & Mike's 57 Rebuild wants to know where to get them...
-
....the windows had belonged to Gary,I believe they had come off a 74 wide gauge...I just had new glass installed in them.
kpm
-
If you can find a set for sale let me know as 57 Rebuild needs a set soon. I would also buy a set for myself.
OT.
-
There is always the chance a marine window manufacturer could custom build them. For a price of course. Thanks for that info, D.O.
-
Look's good. What's the asking price.
-
How much for the wide??
-
...thanks for the inquiries, neither one of them are for sale as of yet
kpm
-
is the yellow wide for sale yet?
-
nope,sorry...though if I decide to sell i'll get ahold of you..thanx
kpm
-
Kpm can you tell what gear ratio you are running in that 1 ton diff. And do you like the 300 with the c6 auto.I have a 55 narrow with a 300 4 speed and original diff. but it is time upgrade to 1ton diff and a c6.any info you have would be great.
-
C6 tranny moves 300 towards rad to make room is the only thing I can remember quick.
-
Would really like to know the gear ratio and how it performs with it eg. top speed and pulling power.
-
still looking for info on gear ratios and c6 performance.and also the tag on my boomer says c 15 what does that mean.
-
c-15 was just one of the model numbers for narrow gauges...eg...b-12...was another.....my gear ratio was 3;55...lots of power...and top end...the c=6 is fords heavy duty auto...for the 300 /six....and if you can find a c=4 auto....they work just as well, and are a fair bit smaller for installation....had not been on here 4 a long while......hope this is still of use!!!
kpm
