Thanks Swamp Dawg for putting these pics on here. Mike had been looking for one of these for a few years & finally got his wish. As you can see he has a lot of work ahead of him yet. He's slowly gathering a few newer parts for her. I think his main plan for this winter is to get the suspension done, to make her mobile for now, & take out the motor to replace the manifold, as it has a few cracks in it.

He had a carb kit installed & has her running. This engine is original to the machine. It matches the tag. We think with new points, plugs, etc, she'll run pretty good. Maybe if the timing is right, she will be getting a large sand blasting soon.

There's one more swing arm to come off, but he's having problems getting the adjusters off. The cross member holding the axle in place is broke at the welding inside the frame rails. With that re welded, he will be able to put more strain on the adjuster to break it free. He has a welder & acetylene & press on site.

Anyone got ideas on getting those adjusters off ? Almost forgot, he salvaged all the needle bearings from the swing arms. People say they can be used again. He has been talking with Shavers about new parts.

Thanks again Swamp Dawg. As you can see we got the adjusters off, Finally!! Had to use a 3/4 drive impact, lots of heat & plenty of brute force, & ignorance. Both of them fought back right to the bitter end.
I guess that's what happens when you get an abundance of "GREASE WORMS" living in it.  He got them, the springs, & swing arms sandblasted & painted. Rims are next.
He's doing a bit of clean up & paint under the belly pan now. Looks like I got the job as secretary & coffee getter. I know the pay is cheap !!!

Getting her gutted out. I'd say a new belly plate will be going in. To me it looks like the banjo housing has a skin welded over it. Going to take apart to check out the inside. I believe the rims went in today for a blasting.

Thanks Grfishmaker. Sorry Swamp Dawg. We'll put the blame on that Grfishmaker !!! Ha HA. Mike had the rear end apart to find the leak. Everything looks OK inside. Whoever put it together the last time didn't do a good enough job sealing it. It'll be done right this time. He's still waiting on a bearing & race for the axle.
I like the job he did on sandblasting the rims. A couple of valve holes had to be patched & redrilled elsewhere. All the caps even screw in place. Like Tony the tiger says "THER"RE GREAT" !! Next step is to prime & paint them. He had bushings made for the swing arms. They have spiral grooves inside that the grease nipples line up with. He also put a short bolt through each swing arm & into the bushing, so everything swings on the axle.

Mike is doing good with the axle. Kinecor found one race in old stock & sold it to him for $40 bucks. He'll put that one inside. He was talking to a good machinist in Corner Brook & he thinks if Mike gets a little smaller bearing & race, he can make a shim to fit between race & housing. That'll go outside.
Other than that he had a couple of bad dents on the belly pan under the trans. He cut the tacks & straightened it back out & re welded it. Also he got his wheels & tires back yesterday. Had new tubes put in. I think he's putting the old tracks back on for now so he can move her back & forth this summer.
Oh yea, he got a manifold for his motor. I had to go to St. John's for Monday for a check up. I stayed in Victoria for the weekend. I made a few phone calls looking for a manifold Sat. evening & came up with a complete intake & exhaust together for $125 bucks for him.
I'll see about a few more pics soon.

Things are winding down a little with this project for now. Work is getting busier & bomber time is getting less. Mike has the rear end together & back in place. He has the wheels & tracks back on so she can be moved out to the portable garage.
The motor was washed & is ready to work on the manifold, plus check her over, probably sand blast & paint before going back in. when that is done it should finish up the mechanical part of it.
He's hoping to get some time to do a bit of body work over the summer months. He came across another original glass tail light awhile back. With any luck she will hit the snow come winter.
I'll keep you posted of any updates. Here are a couple of pics of where she is to now.

The old manifold is cracked pretty bad.

http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/theoldtrucker/DSCF0360.jpg

He will take the trans off to check it out, change oil & paint before going back together.

My little coffee drinking/donut eating buddy wants help. Mike is up to his elbows in body work on his ol' girl. He wants to put a hatch back in the roof. It was taken out by the previous owner. Anyone have a few pics of a factory one along with the dimensions & the brackets used to operate it.

I was down to Mike's today & got a few pics of how he's coming along with his bomber. He has the front section of the inside floor cut out along with part of the belly pan.
Here you see him busy building a frame for his hatch out of 1" square tubing. He's trying to keep it low to the roof. And in the last pic you'll see his will to be bombardier trailer.

  MIKE IS AT IT AGAIN!!

I was down to Mike's today doing an inspection on his progress on his bomber. He isn't pleased with how his roof hatch turned out. He said it looked too high, ( over 2 in",the piece in the pic is only 1" high) & stuck out like a sore thumb. I showed him a pic of an original one & I think he may go that way. I think he is going to see if he can incorporate a piece of lexan inside the perimeter of it.
He is having another problem also. When he was pushing her out side to sand out the inside she would sort of bind up. He said it felt like a soft spongy bind feel to it. He could push her back a foot & go on again OK. He has fairly new sprockets put on also. Could it be the track is too tight, cause there don't seem to be much slack in it. Here's a few pics.

Here are a couple of shots of an original hatch cover.

I see the type of sprockets you have are called "speed sprockets" identifiable with the pointed tips. All that they are supposed to do is let the sprocket enter and exit the cleats more cleanly than the rounded end type sprockets. The bottom of the sprocket where the cleats sit will be the same size no matter which type you use and will not effect the "soft spongy" feeling that you say you have. If anything, I would guess a loose track would be your problem, however you say it seems tight. Other than a loose track, I can not hazard a guess as the why it would bind when you push it. There are alot of other members out there that can probably suggest a cure, as thre are many out there that know a heck of a lot more than me (except The Old Trucker).
Good luck Mike.

Mike was hoping to get his bomber in his garage last month & start at it again, but things got busy for him. He is planning to start again by month's end. He has the engine ready to go in, then I think he will go at the interior. I think the motor doors are next. There is a fellow here that says he can make louvered doors. We will see what happens.

He bought an old truck box just so he could get these 6 stainless steel hinges for his bomber doors. While sizing it up, he come to discover that his machine fit inside just right. Now she has her own summer home.

   HERE'S AN UPDATE OF MIKE'S 57 REBUILD

She breathes again. After a couple of hrs. of rewiring & head scratching she fired up at the turn of the key. After awhile running he had a couple of leaks that required a simple turn of the screwdriver to fix.
When he half covers the carb with his hand she smoothes out pretty good. He thinks with a few adjustments at the carb & timing she will purrr like a kitten.

http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m366/theoldtrucker/PICT0968.jpg

In the pic below he has the wiring roughed in to get her running again. Mike will clean all this up with a bit of wire loom & clamps...

Don't forget my TIMMIES "N" DOUNUTS on your way...He better have broad shoulders. Ha Ha  ;D 8)

I see Mike is making progress with his bomber. With the kids growing up, getting a winters wood cut, hauled & packed away & working steady, it don't leave much time to pick at it. He has a new skin on the drivers door & test fitted the International bunk sliding window for fit. He has all the window openings primed & painted, windshield installed. The round windows will have to be all cut new, due to different rubber size. When the passenger door is done it will all be disassembled, primed & painted. Here are a couple of pics of his progress to date.

F 150 if it were 12 volt fluorescent, they would be really bright, but  it's an old light he had kicking around & used it for when he works on the inside.

yea i seen the cord coming in through the window hole, just a thought if there were a 12V florescent like that would be really nice to have in a bomber especially  when your trying to look for something small you've dropped in the back and the regular dome light wont help

just a thought lol

You can buy 12 volt fluorescent light strips that give off good light. Maybe buy some 12 volt strip lights & attach to the sides just under the seats.   OT.

Where did you find those slider windows for the doors?

Same place that I am going to find mine. The windows in the truck on top is going to be mine. Look for an International tractor truck with a pro sleeper. You will find there are 2 windows per side, some have only one window per side. Back one fixed & front, slider. He ended cutting about 2" out of the middle (was too wide) with offset cuts. With the window in the new skin it will function perfect.

ALL YOU NEED IS A ZIP CUT BLADE IN A GRINDER & A RECIPACATING SAW. TRIM IT UP WHEN YOU GET HOME. JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GET CAUGHT...HA HA

If I'm not mistaken, I think to buy new they are around $120 to  $150.00 each. I will pay $ 20 bucks for both of mine. Look around, you'll find a deal...

He's waiting on new motor door skins from Shavers. Next is the wood oak stiffner. What came off it was 1"x2" oak, so he'll replace it with the same. But wasn't the strips made from 2x2 stock ?? I think he'll be getting new door handles also. There's a fellow around that does pinstriping by hand, so maybe he may get lucky...

Here's a couple new pics of his bomber. He bought all new handles for the doors. When his motor door skins arrive, that should be most of the outside work done I think. He also has "NEW" old school headlight pots ordered..

That's a sharp looking machine !!! It needs a pic or two taken outside to do it justice. Mike showed me how the hinges on the doors worked out pretty good, especialy on his cargo door. The hinges are offset I think allowing the wood strip to be a little longer.

 HE COULDN'T RESIST THE WAIT  ::) ::) 8) ;D

He had to go for his first ride ever in a bomber before all the snow goes ! There's still a few things to finish up outside like motor door skins from Shavers, new headlights, & decals for the front hood & those fancy bell stickers @ the corners.

That is awesome, I can imagine the amount of work that went into doing now I'm tinkering on mine. Very nice job, not everyone can stick with a project until the end like that
