For those of you with the standard 318 Industrials in your bombardiers what kind of performance can you squeeze out of them. Has anybody played with cams or switched to 4 barrel carb? Any idea what the Hp and Tq ratings this motor has.
-
Yes,
Bought a new Weiand 4bbl mani, ( don't fit, front of thermo housing hits back of water pump.)
mine a 313 industrial dodge poly head engine 1962. )
So Itraded a guy in the USA for a stock 4bbl cast intake and bolted a 650 cfm Edelbrock off road
carb on. had to make new throttle linkage hook ups, water hookups, etc..
Nite and day performance. 35% more fun. not much more gas either !!!!

I have a spec sheet for 1962
15 passenger wide, 313 v8 = 145hp.
4400lbs, width 78" 4:10 ratio
I have the 4bbl = 30 hps
and headers = 10 hp
electronic ignition..
==== be pushing 185 - 200 hp.
now that is 1962 specs. don't know what the dyno would say ?
12 passenger narrow 251 6 cyl = 115hp
4200lbs, width 59" 4:10 ratio.

Thanks for that info, sounds like a real track buster! You left the stock cam in there?
-
Same original cam, i am running an electric fuel pump, and
an aluminum gas tank 104 liter, that i have mounted outside, between the
radiator and snow cover door,, NO MORE VAPOUR LOCKING, or rusty filters.
-
Thats a good idea, I heard that vapour locking is a big problem on these machines. Do you have any pictures of your bombardier? I think we would all like to see it.
-
yo Swamp Dog.
I'd like to post some pics, and also see other guys and gals machines.
I cannot figure out how,,on this knowledge box, don't want to screw anything up here.

I have a bookmarked site for the Poly 318,, we have 313 in Canada apparently.
autos.groups.yahoo.com/groups/318poly/
If that doesnt work , send me ur email and Ill send a link.

Thanks there Skenman
I finally got the numbers from a rebuilder.
Took a lot of E Mails to finally find the information. Thank heavens for the internet.
-
We searched high an low for a new cam amd finally sent the original out for regrind. If any one wants the numbers I can supply them.
If I wasn't such a fan of poly engines, I would have never gone this way.
Oh well it sure been interesting

We are having trouble with overheating with or c12 with 318 chrysler with auto transmission. We thought a cowling around fan would help. Does anyone have experience they can share with us. We are in Southern Ontario near kitchener. It was 2 degrees with heavy but not deep snow. The cab was very warm. Is there any way to control the heat or is it strictly a funtion of the motor heta level?
-
a cowling helps, and a six blade fan...and be sure to put a new thermosat...they can get nice and toasty inside when there working a bit, hard to control the heat..open a window or the hatch..

One thing that is often overlooked is the timing of the distributor, when it is too advanced, you will find it lacks in throttle response and tend to overheat very often. Once timed right the throttle response will improve and you will notice the overheat would be somewhat solved. If you still overheat then it would be a cooling problem. Hope this helps you and others just for information.
