Title: Swamp Dawgs 52 Buildup Progress

We have been busy this winter on our 52.
Here are a few pics of the steps along the way.
More to come as well.

Keep the pictures coming it's nice to see from start to finish. I like the removable belly pan idea. So how fast do you think you'll get with the motor being rebuilt?
Title: Re: 52 Buildup Progress
Post by: Swamp Dawg on March 28, 2007, 05:37:01 pm
Top speed of SLOW.  Just kidding.  Before it was rebuilt we had it up to 40km/h on hardpack.  Not sure about after yet.  We arn't expecting much more power, we just wanted it to be a reliable motor capable of long trips.

So how is the progress on the machine coming?

Worked on the engine compartment.  Making things look nice and neat.  Patched lots of holes.
Also looking at installing a door fan for the engine compartment.

Nice job on the engine!  Is the rest of the machine getting the same treatment.  If so, it's gonna make one nice machine!

Well fellow bombardierers we tore into old red again this winter.  This time we attacked the rotting floor boards in the front and patched the front nose for now.  Going to make a removable panel for the nose later.  Also built a new back engine/rad door.  We even had time to put a pair of Hella driving lights on the front. Then we put it together and took it for a run from Flin Flon to Cranberry.

Nice to see the old girl getting a new facelift. Lots of time and work, but the end results are so enjoyable. Plus you are doing it the right way, the way that  Johnny Cash would have done it, "One piece at a time". Also its nice to be able to share your progress with us.  When you look at other peoples machines, one can get new ideas of the different ways people get things done on their machines. There are alot of talented people out there. Also, I enjoy looking over the variuos photos that people send in of their machines. Keep up the good work and happy trails in your travels.

swamp dwag, do you have or can you get a few more pics of the front end?  especially around the steering box and how everything ties in. also a couple of close ups of how the drive sprockets fit in place. that chassis don't seem to be much trouble to build. 3" channel for frame rails and 2 - 2 1/2" tubing for cross members. the more i look at pics the easier it seems to build. i am very interested in restoring a wooden bodied model. that's why i'm interested in the undercarriage. do anybody think the end of an axle can be cut and rewelded?? also cut down the banjo housing???   all close up pics of this area would be just great. like father always said;  IF YA CAN'T FIND IT , BUILD YOUR OWN. !!!!!!!!        thanks  claude

This is where we are at on the front end.  You can see the steering assembly tucked up at the front.  Its a very basic rack and pinion. Which you can buy from Shaver's.

SWAMP DWAG that's gonna be one darn good machine when done!! What is that 1/4 turn gate valve for? A shut off for your heater? Good idea. Neat looking & up out of the way. That dash is going to be sharp looking. You know you can get small rectangular boxes with wording on them such as  LIGHTS - ENGINE FAN - SPARE & the list goes on. Lots of options. I think they would compliment the dash. They also light up with your dash lights. No more fumbling in the dark to find a switch.  I think you would like the freightliner ones. Also look at peterbilt, kenworth, & western star. If you see a truck somewere look at the dash. You can also get visers to fit around your gauges. they make everything stand out. My hats off to you. Doing a real great job.

mr. swamp dwag, is that a grey primer you have on the floor or is it some sort of undercoating? sure makes it look 100% better! dwag that heater up front, is it just for the defrost or do it also warm up the front of the cab?    hope you fellows are not getting bored with me asking questions about these machines. i'm new to all this & i find it very interesting.
Title: Re: 52 Buildup Progress
Post by: Swamp Dawg on February 26, 2008, 08:14:00 am
There are 2 heaters in the front, the small round heater keeps the window warm.  The big square one is the cab heater, which has a valve to shut the flow of hot water to it.  Sometimes it gets way too hot in there.  And the floor is just primer.

hello again sir. i noticed in one of your pics that your machine has coil springs on the front. i thought they had a chain hooked to a pipe with a spring inside. is that something stock or is it modified? do you have a closeup of that area? i dare say if i were up around where all you people live, i'd go through a heck of a lot of film!

Swamp Dawg what are you planning to do with regard to the dash. Thinking about paint? What about wood? A nice piece of oak or cherry veneer about 1/16th" thick with a nice stain on it, I think would look sharp. You can cover up the two welded ends with a piece stainless angle. It would look simular to that one on Rader Runs.
Keep up the great work. If I ever see you, I'll pat you on the back!!!

Nope no wood.  This is a metal bombardier!  We painted it black with a textured paint.  Looks real sharp.  Pictures to come.

Dawg I noticed you still see the channel frame on the floor in the dash pic. Do that whole area be covered with metal right to your heater?  Doing a great job!!! Can't wait for more pics. I wish others would show some of their handy work.

Yes it might get covered in eventually, but leaving it open to the front.  I'm pretty tall and I need my leg room!

Mind showing an ol' fellow what the dash looks like with paint? I guess work is picking up for the summer up your way. Kinda tight finding extra time for the bomber.
In my case I'd be picking @ it in the summer & riding in the winter!! Lots of time on my hands. Good luck & looking forward to seeing her this fall.

Looks ok. What gauges do you have? Speedometer, tach, oil pressure, water temp, gas, volt meter, amp meter, & trans temp? You plan on keeping that barnyard Cadillac steering wheel? Only joking about the wheel Dwag!!! Do the horn work?

In reply # 12 Dwag, I saw new steel plate for the pan. Would it be the same gauge as used for the rad door & the front hood section ??

I made the Rad door from 16ga, and I think the belly and nose are 12ga.

Swamp Dawg did you get your old radiator recored,  using the old tanks or did you modify a different tank ?? I'm curious ??
Title: Re: 52 Buildup Progress
Post by: Swamp Dawg on December 06, 2008, 09:43:09 pm
We refurbished the old tank, just cleaned out the scale.  We put in a different rad all together, it barely fits.
Title: Re: 52 Buildup Progress
Post by: the old trucker on December 07, 2008, 06:58:56 am
Sorry Dawg i screwed up with the way I asked my question. What I thought I asked was did you get your old rad re cored by using the tanks from the old rad. Did you have much trouble getting the gas tank clean & what kind of machine did your new rad come from??
Lastly Dawg, You have a carburetter engine in your bomber. I can get a 6 Cly. 300 Ford with fuel injection. Some people tell me that a fuel injected engine will not starve for fuel. Do you or anyone else have have any problem with regards to fuel.

Title: Re: 52 Buildup Progress
Post by: Swamp Dawg on December 07, 2008, 10:14:04 am
Oh I miss read your question, ( I read pretty fast).  No we never bothered with cores on the rad, we wanted a bigger rad for increase cooling efficiency.  The tank is I believe an original steel somewhat square tank, that wasn't in too bad of shape.  We put a handful of small sized slag (byproduct of the mine in town), and shook it to death then cleaned with varasol a few times.

Yes its carbed engine, we haven't really had any fuel delivery problems that we could notice, actually I think I stalled it once when I spun out on a steep hill.  I suppose fuel injection would have prevented that.  We did think about converting ours to fuel injection, but we decided that staying simple with a carb might be more reliable.  But if the motor already has it, I would hesitate using it in a bomber.

What did your new radiator come from ?? CHEVY....FORD..... or DODGE?? Nice to know. Save some wear & tear on the old measure tape !!! Might help out Gror also !!!

I don't remember, I think its out of an Industrial application.

Im using the original rad because it is a heavy industrial one and has just been recored. Only change Ive done is got the old filler cut off and a pressureized one put on . Hoses are giving me trouble but finally got that figured out. If lucky should be running for Christmas.

Swamp Dawg, 57narrownewf is taking out the old 251 & thinking about putting in a 300 Ford. I noticed you said there is not a lot of room there, but it fit. Would you or Gror have any measurements or tips on where the engine mounts should be mounted to ??
Title: Re: 52 Buildup Progress
Post by: Swamp Dawg on December 26, 2008, 07:42:01 pm
You know, the best way to mount an engine is trial and error.  There isn't really anyway I can measure the mounts and give an accurate description that would fit his machine.  You have to take into consideration the angle the motor will sit at, the fan distance from the rad, transmission supports, and of course all the motor trimmings have to clear the firewall and tub.

We are going to bring the bomber in the shop in a week or so, if we have the belly pan off I can shoot some pictures of how it sits in there.  As you know its a little hard to show pictures of the mounts because you can't even see them.
Title: Re: 52 Buildup Progress
Post by: the old trucker on December 26, 2008, 10:15:41 pm
10/4 on that Dawg. I think you have a couple of pics of the mounts mounted to the motor posted here now. I guess the best way to go is to put the engine & trans together, then when it's in position check clearances between rad & fan, & everything else should pretty well fall in place, I hope.

I agree I used a lot of Swamp Dawgs pictures for refrence but the only way to do it is put it in and take it out a 100 times till you get it right.

Copy on the 100 times Gror. I guess all it takes is a lot of trial & error. I'm just not too keen on the 100 times though !!!!

Swamp Dawg have you got the old 52 back in the shop yet ?? What are you hoping to get done for this turn around ?
Hear back from Gror about his machine. Also did you see Houlios dvds yet ? You'll have to get after him to make a copy for yea.
It's costly getting a bunch made up @ a time. I got a couple more pics of Mike's bomber to send your way as soon as the young fellow puts them in the computer.

Sorry to tell you OT we don't have the time to be working on it right now.  Sure would be nice to get to work on the body, that is are next big step.  But once you start it you have to finish so it will take up lots of time.  So we'll keep you posted.

Swamp Dawg on page one of your rebuild, pics # 4,6 & 7 from the top down show the motor mounts. It looks like you used the original mounts & made up a couple of vertical brackets to secure them. Then you made up framing to accept the mounts. Am I right on this ??
Also I would like to know how high the bottom of the base pan is above the "BELLY PAN". One last question, would you remember the size of the removable pan section ??    Thanks !! :)

Looks good Dawg. I see there must be a shortage of TIM cups up your way. Guess it's because there is a big demand on them down around my way. When you make the hatch, be sure to take a couple of pics for Mike.

Don't forget to get lots of pics of the rally this weekend. Looking forward to seeing them soon. Everyone have a great time.
