Title: I found a new one
Post by: granpasboy on December 27, 2011, 07:45:06 pm
As I was driving to my in-laws for Christmas I saw a steel bug sitting along the Highway with a for sale sign sitting about six miles from my place. I will post pictures when I get them downloaded from my daughters camera. I hope to do it later tonight.

The second picture is what I saw sitting in the field along the road. The first one was taken beside my shop. The third one is my family beside it.
This one is 58 R27, I don't know to much about it yet I will be getting in the shop soon.

Hi OT, I do have inside pictures. When I purchased it I was told the engine was bad, but notsure what is wrong with it. I plan on putting in the shop to check it over. I will let you know the outcome.

Is it the original flat head or something bigger ??? The interior looks like it could use a bar of soap.    OT.

It is the 251, was told it did not run, but it is not stuck. I am going to try to get it running before doing much to it. You can tell it has been sitting for a while.

Shouldn't be too hard to fire up if it isn't seized. Is the manufacturer plate still on the machine. Looks to be a 1953 or so.

Yes the tag is still on it. The date on it is 58.

nice looking machine,I'm thinking you will most likely want to replace the flat head six. They just do not have enough snuff for the wide gauges....

Right now I am thinking a 350 or a vortec 4.3L. I am not sure what I will choose yet.

If you go for the 350, the engines in mid 90's GM trucks have an oil cooler at least my truck has. It is sort of bolt on extension to the engine block at the oil filter. Would be nice to have in the tough going. May have to use the radiator that came with the truck to solve all the plumbing. If it is 1958, it has the wide air door at the back, right?

the 4.3L vortec engine sounds good, was thinking of putting one in the 78 wide. just sticking with the original 318 engine. nothing wrong with it so leaving it the way it is.

I have a chevy silverado 1500 with the vortec engine, and it starts without any problems in -50 degrees celcius without plugging it in

It has the narrow door on the rediator, but I am thinking about using my woody door as a pattern to put the wide door on it. I am leaning toward a vortec 350, just like more power.

I have put the 307 truck and 327 Industrial through the narrow door with a little wiggling. I thought this machine was older because of the steering wheel. If it is 58 you may have timken bearings rather than rollers on the suspension. A real bonus.

I am thinking about selling this one. Is anyone interested? I never did get a chance to work on it, just parked it inside the shed. I have the front wheels for it too.

What do you boys think it is worth? I am hoping to get back what I paid. I am open to offers. The tracks look good, tires are fair body has a few dent but not rusty, the glass is all there.
