V6 or Straight 6 Engines / Re: 265 valve settings

I think that will be good. The J5 is lighter and the engine should run cooler than a bombardier with a ton of fish in it. I always found the j5's adequately powered by the 251's so a tight 265 will be even better.

I seem to recall they were 10 I and 12 Ex cold but that should be checked in the Chry Ind manual. Ted Playford and others have told me they set them 2 thou looser when using in commercial fishing bombardiers, where they often run hotter and harder than in autos and trucks. He said they specified this to rebuilders and had no more burnt valves.

I understand the national seal 5797, is no longer available. I got lucky and got one from Mexico when I did mine. But if you look back Averyman found a NAPA seal that worked out OK for him. The original National Pinion seal was 5851, but CR#18880 does the job as well.

25 feet is lots for length. That is sure cheap...2$ a foot for 48 inch. I had 24 inch with factory edges so I used a scribe to mark off 5 and a half inches off each side and I used these as my outside belts with the factory sides out. Then I marked of 5 and a half from what remained on each side and cut my other two. I used an ordinary Olfa kife. I made a nice straight shallow cut right on the line, then put a board under the bigger part, inside the line so the cut piece is falling away from the cut and not binding. Olfa makes a knife with an offset blade that no doubt would be easier to use,but I couldn't find one when I needed it. Some guys go 6 inches but it is too tight on the woodies. Your numbers seem right to me.

It will be 4.1 to 1. With those aluminum sprockets you should have it made. I'd have a look inside and if it was left full of oil as is normally the case, you should be good to go.

Don't know if he comes on here in summer but stuckinslush (Darrell) used a diff from a ford explorer and it even bolted up to his sprockets. I think he had to put spacers in when he took the rotors off but it was perfect and the ratio was great for his woodie. That is a pretty tough diff apparently.

The newer metals like Mikes were different and I thik Dave pointed out that you would have to make an off set hub if you want to use it, If the carrier is ok in your newfound diff, just put it in your housing and use your axles. It looks like the sprockets were put on inside out from the pics so it must of come off a narrow? See Orins pic of a proper set of aluminum sprockets on a narrow. Your diff won't have any trouble handling the 300 six. Lots of them around here with V8's, unless you are going to do some heavy freighting.

I have them on my metal , in fact they were on all the metals up to 1954 or so. These look like the heavy aluminum sprockets. Some were a bit thinner. No reason they won't work on yours. Was the machine they were on a narrow? Not sure when the last cast ones were used, before 1950 I think. If you can get that diff it would be dandy.

Well it looks a bit like it but I never seen one with those bolt holes tapped in at the spline end. They might be ok for a brake mount. I suppose you'll have to get someone to pull the axles and send a pic of the spline. If it is after 1953 or so it likely has the finer axle spline and therefor of no use to you. AS to the ratio it is hard to say, you'd have to turn and count or take it out and look at the stamp.

I just tried the search function for the forum and Swampdog did a pretty good job of setting up this forum. Apparently I answered this question in General Forums back on October 1st,2006 when I was still a young man.

Looks like the Resources Department Manitoba Government  machine, one of the last they have, so not likely to be available unless they trade it in to the dealer for a new skidoo. Then a person can buy it from the dealer.

I don't think the power wagon will be the same and I believe you have to be earlier than 54 Chrysler car or so to get the right spline.

Mine are on like yours too OT. I think Ted told me they were wide guage reversed and they line up fine. He is away for a few weeks so I can't ask him. Too bad you are having such a hard time finding a diff. I thought there would be some early 50's car difffs somewhere in your neck of the woods.
