V6 or Straight 6 Engines / Re: Flooding 251 engine
« on: March 24, 2013, 11:36:59 am »
The automatic choke on these engines seems a little slow in coming off choke (at least on mine) so it runs pretty rich until warmed up. There is an accelerator pump in the carb that gives it a shot of fuel when you tramp it hard, the linkage to it can be adjusted I believe by bending the rod that activates the plunger to reduce the amount of fuel delivered on each stroke.

General Electrical / Re: Alternator draw
« on: March 20, 2013, 10:07:56 pm »
The 6 volt system is positive ground, the 12  system is negative ground, just wondering if that has something to do with it...usually this sort of problem is due to a leaking diode in the alternator.  You may not see a spark at the terminals, have to use a sensitive ammeter to check for current draw. Lastly, is it a good battery ?

Another source for tires.... Sunvalley Tire in Winkler Manitoba.  They had a batch of 4.50 x 16 Goodyears for Bombardiers but are sold out at the moment.. can get more.  Call Ken @ 204 362 000 for details and pricing.  Met Ken today at Ag Days in Brandon.

In 1951 the 18 passenger machine is listed as a C model and the B model was a 12 passenger. Was there a model change between 1948 and 1951?  There should be a identification plate on the firewall in the engine compartment. In any event it is rare to find a woodie that old in great condition, Congratulations!

General Discussion / Re: cranberry portages bombardier rally

Here in SW Manitoba we never got enough snow to use our machines so it was hard to get enthused about any rallys. Only put 6 miles on my machine, kind of expensive considering the $218 registration fee.

Great pictures..  here in S W Manitoba we only had a little bit of snow that soon melted. Put 6 miles on my machine all winter and its back in the shed now as the grass is starting to turn green here.  A waste of the $195 license !

On a '51 the origional shape is like in the bottom picture.  The top one does have a nicer look though....

Wooden Bombardiers / Re: WASCANA'S 48 'WOODY' REBUILD
« on: January 28, 2011, 05:04:37 pm »
Wascana.. On my '51The interior framework is finished in what looks to be a clear varnish and the wood is very light in color. The interior roof and side panels are stained and varnished in a darker color.  This machine is all origional and the finish both inside and out is as it came from the factory.
Nice work on your Cockshutt tractor...

Might want to reconsider using those cables as they tend to collect moisture and freeze up.  Had this happen to the throttle on my snowplane a few years ago and recently the hydraulic control cables on a new tractor. Now my neighbour had the same problem with his snowplane throttle. Probabaly why the linkages on bombardiers are open rods...

Drivetrain / Re: sprockets and cleat spacing
« on: December 10, 2010, 10:52:40 pm »
$320 per belt is about right, if you are using your old cleats add another $100 for new bolts  and self locking nuts to complete the whole job. We sandblasted the backing plates and the part of the cleat that contacts the belt and primed them try and protect them from rust. (Likely not worth the considerable effort)....

Cleat spacing on my origional belts was 3.75 in. center to center which is the same as Dan Shavers replacement belts. (1951 woodie)
