Title: power steering
Post by: 48bomber on January 30, 2011, 07:37:19 pm
Hey All!
Hope everyone is getting some use of your machines this winter!
We have been out many times to the lake for ice fishing. No fish but the trip out and back is fun!
In the General topic in #2 we had talked about power steering .I want to put it in my 48 narrow guage. There was coments it had been done on wide guage. Can we get some Ideas flowing out there , and a pic if possible what might work?  I did some looking at pumps . but dont know enough what is needed.
  Help please!!

Like they say....a picture is worth a thousand words. It would be nice to see how much trouble is involved into doing it. I wonder if you took out that gear on the floor, fitted in a push/pull cylinder & then cut off the steering column & install a rotary valve like Dpaulson did on his rebuild ?? You will still have to install a power steering pump on your engine.

OT
I think you are on the right track.   I dont want to cut out the original gear  etc , unless I am sure the modification will work.  I think it will require alot of hyd force on a small cylinder to turn the skis . It is hard to turn on tight trails in our area the way it is set up with the gear system.
How is yours doing ?  Ready for wood yet?

Thanks alot Rattleman, I'm sure it works fine. It shows how everything fits together. Can you still turn the skis without the engine running ?
Are you going to Amqui ? Where are you going to in New Brunswick ? Would that be on the 12th of March ??

                                                                                 Thanks Again...
                                                                                 The Old Trucker

PS. Don't forget to take lots of pics....

Thanks!
That is giving me some idea of what it should look like. It looks it is a addition to the original gear system , and that what I was hoping for. Next issue, what is the cyl , and control valve off?

I was told by Glen (Glen's 59 newbuild ) that he is going to use a rotary valve from a forklift. Sorta like Dpaulsons. I'm thinking you need a push/pull cylinder. That one looks about 20-24" long.  And for your bomber, I think you need to install a power steering pump from an older car or pickup like in the pics. Glen is looking for a valve for mine.
