I recently installed a disc brake arrangement that may be of interest to anyone wanting to upgrade to hydraulic brakes.

Brake Parts Source

Rotor used on a 1993 Ford Festiva   8.25 diamenter      Caliper used on a 2004 Chev Impala (rear wheel)

-weld a 3/8 steel round plate on to the differential yoke and machine  the O.D. to fit the I.D. of the brake rotor rotor
-machine or grind out clearance to slip the rotor over top of the yoke
-mark out a bolt pattern (5/16) 4 holes minimum to attach the rotor the the machined yoke flange
-cut a 3/16 plate caliper mounting bracket and 2 gussets
-mount your rotor on to the pinion shaft and clamp the caliper on to the rotor to line it up to weld the supporting plate on to the differential
-use a shim spacer between the welded plate and the caliper to accommodate any alignment issues in the future

I hope this will be of some help.Feel free to contact me if you require more information

I have had good luck sourcing items like wiper parts from Cadel.com in Vancouver and Traction.com truck parts in most major cities.
Cadel is the wholesale arm for Traction. You will find a link to AM Equipment which is a large OEM wiper supply company. The direct link to it is www.amequipment.com The wipe motors listed should interchange with the American Bosch bolt patterns.Once you have a part number any Traction store will bring in your product. They have a good selection of wiper arms as well.

Name:  Ray Rossington

Location: Flin Flon, Manitoba

Interests:
I have been interested in Bombardiers and other types of track vehicles since I was a kid.  In my previous life as a heavy equipment contractor we owned a number of track vehicles, Nodwells, Muskeg tractors and Cat dozers, used mainly for bush work and opening up winter roads.  Over this period of time we actioned a number of major rebuilds in our shop facility.

Presently I run a small manufacturing company specializing in the manufacture and marketing products used in ice road construction. www.bigice.ca
When time permits my partner and I (Swamp Dawg) have a number of projects on the go.  Our 1983 Bombardier Muskeg tractor is under going a ground up rebuild, the Bombardier 1952 Narrow Gauge is slowly coming back to life as it has seen a new driveline, tracks and body work, and the Bombardier 1974 Wide Gauge has not seen the shop to date.

General:
We recognized that there was no location on the internet that offered information resources for Bombardier Snow Bus ( Bug) users, so we created www.Northerntracks.com to try to provide a medium where interested individuals can view and exchange knowledge that is necessary to optimize the performance, reliability and looks of these fantastic over the snow vehicles while at the same time many new friendships develop with folks of mutual interest.

Going Forward:
I would like to encourage more viewers to consider offering their help or views that is required by the various Bombardier owners/rebuilders.  There are signed in members that undoubtedly have an enviable amount of Bombardier knowledge by virtue of the fact they may have spent a life time working, repairing and rebuilding these great machines.
We would like to thank all that have contributed to this forum to date and look forward to  hearing from them in the future.

Metal Bombardiers / Re: Dan Shavers modified machine

Now this rig is top line from bumper top bumper. With out a doubt this is one of the finest reworked Bombardiers on the continent. The fine work manship that was required to create this sporty over the snow vehicle is synonymous with the same quality that is seen in the Bombardier parts that Dan manufactures. It has been said that when Dan cuts a machine in half he may ad 5 feet or take out 5 feet.Say, by the way what do you call this Porsche of the snow buses,a B-6.
Good luck

We quickly rigged up a caliper brake set up in our Bombardier equipped with a Chev 1 ton diff.  We mounted the caliper support plate to the top pinion flange bolts, then fabed up an angle iron frame that the caliper can float on.  The picture will give you an idea of the design.  On a diff with no pinion bolts you will be forced to weld an attachment to the housing to support the caliper assembly.  I can supply a drawing at a latter date.  Good luck.

Hello Snowbusman
I have always thought modernizing the Bombardier braking system would be a welcome modification.  I have done a few caliper brake rig ups.  We purchase a small rotor and caliper assembly to match, weld a flange on the pinion yoke to bolt the rotor on to.  A mount must be designed and welded to the diff to attach the caliper.  I am trying to locate a hydraulic caliper assembly with a mechanical lever and cam that can be connected to an emergency brake cable.  I will soon have this part no. available.  The brake slave cylinder can be set up in many ways.  I hope the pictures will help you out for ideas.

Drivetrain / Bombardier track pitch
« on: January 22, 2007, 08:34:41 pm »
Hello
I recently aquired a 1975 Bombardier and I would like to run it a while before I change the belts and sprockets.I notice sprocket wear and I wonder if this is caused by track stretch as well as normal wear. What should the track pitch be on a machine like this.
Thank you
