Metal Bombardiers / Re: 51 R18 Rebuild
« on: August 29, 2010, 08:29:07 am »
It is all done in a single motion.  It allows a bit of oil through when the steering wheel is turned.  I guess that's why they call it a 'hand pump' because it will pump oil to the appropriate side of the cylinder even when the power steering pump is not turning (ie when the engine is not started) although you must put some effort into steering.

As far as the brake caliper goes, I was using the instructions that Cletus gave using the same parts in http://www.northerntracks.com/forum/index.php?topic=352.0, but in assembly showed that I cannot mount the rotor in the same direction as he did as I have the original rear end (Ford 9") and his has been replaced with a 3/4 ton rear end.  There is a gusset  at the bottom of the pumpkin preventing the installation that way.  The rotor was turned around to have the offset facing the rear of the vehicle.  I used the same brake caliper as he did.  The only thing that I can say is that you can get the calipers for either the right side or the left side.  The difference is where the bleed screw is.  I got the wrong side and to bleed the system, my caliper must be removed and turned upside down to get the screw to the top.

I haven't posted much in this thread, but I have been working on it every weekend since the last pictures posted.  I have put on about 10 gal of body fill.  I am sure that I sanded off most of it.  Somebody that knows what their doing could of done in 1/4 of the time that I spend, but it did turn out pretty good.  There is a lot of dints and imperfections that accumulate over 60 years.  I had the guy at the body shop bring his colour camera over to get the colour code of the original paint, before it completely disappeared from the body fill.  It's came as Western Star medium maroon.  I didn't realise that this paint is so pricy, but I hope it is as good as he says it is.  I should get it paint next weekend.

I was thinking that because I already have the steering pump, but I was just wondering if it is worthwhile to do.  I mean, would you use it if it was on your machine. and how much would you use it.

I think that wheel setup would take away too much of the much needed ski runners and the steering would be difficult because the wheels must slide sideways in order for the ski to turn, but it's nice to see different ideas.

Tell me if this is a dumb idea.  A couple years ago I built ski wheels for my polaris sled similar to http://skiwheelz.com/.  There is a video on the main page that you can watch.  They do work good, but I find that they are not used much because you can get off the sled and help push the front while your moving to turn on pavement or gravel.  Obviously you can't do that with a bomber plus they don't turn very sharp either so you need as much traction as possible for steering.  The places that it may be used would be for refueling at a service station and probably for repair work etc during the summer.  I don't have any use out of mine yet to know if going for fuel is much of a problem or not.  Feedback good or bad is appreciated.

On second thought, probably not.  As it would interfere for opening the door completely open.

Does anyone know if the wood strip on the cargo door came from factory or just added by the last rebuilder.   I have only seen this done a couple of times.

Although it looks smaller, it is drawn full scale in autocad.  If I get a  good picture of the design used on the rear door, I may draw that one also.  Do you know if it is the same drawing that is found on the front.  I don't think that I really ever saw two the same and many do not have anything on the front.

I found and downloaded a program that's  a screen caliper and measured it myself.

I drew it up in autocad.  It looks pretty close.

Does anyone have a metal with the original pinstripping still on,   like in this picture?

I am looking for some measurements of particularily the corners.  I have a vinyl cutter that I use for cutting decals and if I had some measurements I could draw it up in autocad.  I can make it available to others if they wish to pinstripe their machines.

General Discussion / Bombardier pricing
« on: August 03, 2010, 07:52:28 pm »
Now this is inflation.  I wonder if most of this cost came from building out of metal as 1951 was the year that they switched from wood to steel.  This page also had a picture that showed a bombardier, but has wheel wells in front so it must be a metal body, but the head lights are lower on the hood much like a 1952 and not like on my 1951.

This is a cut/paste from a translated french web page.

B-12 bomber
Bomber B-12, 1951, bought in 1956 per Alexis Charon, of Saint-Ulric, before his restoration. In 1951, this vehicle, nine, were worth 1500 $, but it cost approximately 6000 $ in 1956, whereas new a Chevrolet truck was sold 2500 $.

Those sprockets look in decent shape also, maybe get that too.
