Once again I am looking for info on a unit we own.
the two metal plates are stamped with the following info.

Would appreciate all and any input as we are doing a short run from Rankin Inlet to Chesterfield Inlet.
Pulling a load od 10,000 LBS.

The machine is in great shape, we just lifted all accesses to expose motor, transmission, gear box and hydraulics for skid steering.
Every thing is ok.
Now that we have it apart, I will change all belts,hoses. points. plugs, coil and hi tension leads. For sure we will rewire all electrical.
Hope to make a trip to Chesterfield Inlet this week. Pulling a sled witn a small hoe (10,000 lbs) and our Bombardier Amp Tramp wil carry misc. materials for a project plus fuel. For need of faster transportation a Yamha Rino on tracks will accompany us.

How many miles is the trip & what's the terrain like Bob ?

The distance from Rankin Inlet to Chesterfield Inlet as the crow flies, 60 miles. I'me guessing 120 miles overland.
Not sure what we will run into as far as terrain. We are going to send the Rino ahead and pick the easiest path.
The fastest route is via the sea ice but we are not experience enough.

Thats an older version of my muskeg carrier. A carrier has the front mount engine leaving usable deck space but front heavy. When I added the dozer to the front of mine, I needed to add about 500 lbs of iron to the rear to be able to drive with no load on the deck. The tractor has a mid mount engine. Mine has a small perkins diesel about 80 hp with a 5 speed new process trans. It is cheep to run at about 1/2 gal / hour. The doubled up wheels/ sprockets make it indestructable, but it does not do well in deep snow as you cannot steer.

Should be good machine for that job Bob. Has it been sitting for a long time? The early carriers and tractors had cable in the tracks and often water would seep in to cracks and rust the cable. Sometimes a perfectly good looking belt would break on us. You can usually put a piece of small chain over a break by carrying some longer 3/8 carriage bolts and washers. About 1967 they went to solid wheels on the back axle, so you could always get home. I don't know if you have slush conditions up there, but if so you have to watch for inside wheels freezing up and wearing the rubber off. I used to carry a log or timber to run over once I was on the hard trail again to free them up. Changing inside wheels is a bit tough until you get the right technique. Oh, another thing to check is the exhaust fittings. In the traqctor it wasn't as bad but in the carrier with the engine in the cab it can be bad. Have a good trip.

If this machine has sat a while, you should remove the side plates on the transmission where the PTO would be mounted to see if there is any bearing pieces laying on the bottom of the case. Mine sat for about 8 years before I bought it and the bearings on the uppermost shaft failed right away as they are not in oil and rusted.

Its been a busy day but things are comming togeather.

Trip canceled for now. Everything checked out fine and we decided to do a trial run. No power, can't even take a small hill.
The next thing we check is the speed box. Any suggestions where to purchase a replacement ?

Too bad. Looks like the weather was good. Is the motor putting out. It is likely a 265, which should be ok with the 3 speed as they were geared down more than the muskeg tractor which didn't have the transfer case gear box. Maybe your timing is too retarded??

Help again. There is a box 16 or so inches behind the transmission.
At an angel from the transmission a drive shaft connected thru a universal to the upper part of this box.
Beneath that drive shaft is another drive shaft going to my differential at the front of the vehicle.
Anyone know the name of this box and what is it for gears ?

It is the Speed Reducer/ Transfer Case. The gearing is 1.58 to 1. The Muskeg Tractor M7's didn't need to change the direction of the driveline and so they were faster. They would go over 20mph but yours tops at 16 and were really 12mph machines. Some carriers had another output shaft high on the passenger side of the tyransfer case, facing forward and high, to run a heavy winch that bombardier built for logging. Some has a lighter Braden winch, lower on the deck and PTO driven. That is the one I used and it was a good setup. Never had trouble with that part and don't know what makes it tick. Is it stripped ?? Hopefully it can be rebuilt. Finding a replacement may be difficult. I don't remember the service it required either but I suppose it is gear oil bath type case. It was a long time ago and the carrier was a bit older than yours.
