Andy do you have any plans on doing any work on her or use her like she is ??
-
Old Trucker,
Thanks for posting my pics ,as well as the forum help!
I am going to enjoy this winter with the b12 as is. The mechanical parts of the machine were rebuilt approx 1998 , and are in excelent condition from what I can tell. The wood was also redone then ,and needs some attention. I am a cabinet maker by trade ,and the plan will be to redo it in the spring.
I will make as close to original from the information that you all are sharing on the forum. I will be changing the interior stain colour ,and wood framing to some cherry I have been saving.
The purchase from some fine people in Creton Sask was a pleasure .They have a passion for the bomers ,and its obvious from the pictures they sent with the machine.

Hey All,
Today I took off the front wheels and installed the skis back on. Then we went around the yard in the fresh snow from Wed. This is going to be alot of fun this winter out on the trails!!!!

Did you have any luck yet getting 1/4" birch plywood?
Oldsledz
-
Oldtrucker,
One of my main suppliers for the shop has the g2s (good 2 sides) birch ply .I have asked to find out use for outside ,as well if it is rotary cut , or flat sliced. He has not got back to me yet on this. When I find out I will post it.
48bomber
-
I think you were talking to Oldsledz on this matter. OT.
-
Hey all,
Is there a place to get the heat, oil, temp, charge gauge? My bomber has modern ones installed. You can see what it looks like in my pics of the interior. When I redo the dash I would like to have the proper one.
48bomber
-
Sorry OT for the incorect post name! I am still learning tis ting ! I am much better with wood and tools!
48bomber
-
I think the 48 has gauges from a 38 or 39 Ford. You may look at some websites that cater to these vehicles. Beware of the sending unit fot the temp gauge. It was hard to find. I had all my gauges sent to a fellow in N. Carolina and had them re-built. (D + M Restoration). Look under the Varnished machine in the Narrow Ga. topic and it will show a pic of them just after they were re-built. Good luck.
Oldledz
P.S. I don't think there is an exterior grade to the 1/4" birch plywood. I made sure of coating all sides and edges many times before assembly.

That's OK, as long as you share your woodworking skills with me!!

Would I be right in saying if the plywood was rotary cut, that you will have a better looking grain pattern?? 48 bomber, I am far from a carpenter, but I have an interest in it.
A dusty ol' trucker
-
The 1/4" A2 birch plywood that I got was rotary cut. It seems to look the same as the old orignal plywood that I removed.
Oldsledz
-
Would flat sliced wood give you the book match effect??
-
Hey,
Ot is correct ,as most pics of the machines look like rotary cut. The grain is irregular pattern as the log is peeled as it turns , giving a repeating pattern but usually a uneven grain pattern. Flat sliced , repeats as well but is sliced off the side of the log ,then joined to match. This gives a board look without the uneven grain as with rotary. I want flat sawn if possible.
48bomber
-
Hey,
On the 6th picture down of the door on mine shows oak that is flat sliced , but a poor grade as the almost knot giving poor grain. This will be gone next year !

Hey All,
The pic with the guy untarping the machine is the truck driver from Manitoba. I still have a full head of hair!

-
Oh yea, I heard that line before. Your just trying to be another Kojak. I'll see if I can find a lollipop to send to you. hahaha!!!!
-
48 bomber I was downtown to a larger building supply store inquiring about the availabity of #1 G2S 1/4" birch. Only way I can get is by the lift, same as Orin's problem.
Do you know of any suppliers around that can sell by the sheet ?? OT.
-
I stock it. Come and get it.
Oldsledz
-
I have a friend that is going to somewhere in New York in a week or so to pick up a new snowmobile & trailer. Maybe able to work something out.
OT's getting excited
-
OT,
Go to a local cabinetmaker and ask about the ply. They will have a supplier for wholsale ply for what they do. I know here that my suppliers can get , and carry spiecies and quality that is not at the local lumber yard. I do not buy sheets by the lift, only order what i need and is nerver a issue.

Thanks for the tip 48 bomber. I'll follow that up. OT.

48bomber, I viewed your pics with interest. I am working on '48 B12 for a friend. Nothing heavy yet, mainly fuel delivery-rust in tank, and small wiring issues. Although I have not finished examining the entire machine, it looks very original and sound. It looks very much like yours and at first glance they could be mistaken for one another. I have no experience with BIG BOMBERS but am learning through this forum. I do have some info on Chrysler flatheads from old MOTORS manual and 1945 US Army manual on the 236.6. This motor says T120 IND and might be 251.
Thanks for the input to this forum. BIGDAVE

Hey BIGDAVE, do you have any pics floating around for us to a look see. I have to check out your handy work. ha ha ha . I would be happy to help you in putting them on here if you need.

You are right about The Old Trucker analyzing the pictures. He has been know to go through the familys Christmas photos and pick out which of them has any missing buttons on their cloths or which one is developing cavities in their teeth. No wonder he is the team leader of CSI Newfoundland.

And proud of that title, Mr. Fisherman !!!! ;D ;D

Thanks OLD trucker. It looks alot like 48bomber's and Houlio's. These pics were taken this month at a vintage snowmobile ride near McGreger,MN. Will get more pics of details when it gets out of garage. Have been researching cause for differential whine. Ideas?
BIGDAVE
-
I had my diff to a specialist here. Mine has some slight play, or slop in it. If I use it like it is, they say I'll hear a whining noise all the time on account of the slack in the crown & pinion & a chip off one of the pinion gears. I've had three local mechanics here look at it & they think with new bearings & seals, & (80/90 gear oil ??), it should be OK. I know very little about this stuff myself .
-
Thanks for the pictures! It looks just like mine , only in a little better exterior condition.
On the trips out with mine I cant hear the differential at all. The tracks make some noise on the sprockets , but minimal. The engine is where the majority of the noise comes from in the cab ,but is not loud enough to bother.
The diferential can be checked for play by taking the u joint off by the diff, and taking the tracks off the sprockets.
check the axcel play and seals behind the sprockets ,turn the drive end to see if there is any play in the bearing end. I was told by a mechanic the play turning back and forth should be a 1/16 turn.As well the mechanic turned mine with a screw driver against his ear and to the diff housing to listen for noises within like several teeth broken etc. The amount these machines are used ,a little play wont hurt as long as the bearings are good.Change the oil.
I am no expert but this is what a mechanic did for me .

48bomber
48bomber, do you have an adapter for the front wheels. This is the first time I heard of putting wheels on the front of a woody. Any pics floating around for an old trucker to look at ??
-
Hi all,and OT,
Its been a bit from my last post. The wheels were made up to fit in the pin holes for the ski. The wheels are small tires from a conveyor belt from a mine. Only about the size of a kids wagon tire. It will not turn very well , but atleast the machine can be moves around during the summer. I have no pics of them but can get some when I put them on if you like.

Has anyone put power steering on a bomer like mine ? Any pics info would be great!
48bomber

48bomber, look up general discussion.. page 2, second last one down. It's called "adding power steering"
OT.
-
Hey all,
Hope all is well with everyone! I am a little excited tonight , as its snowing!!
Battery charged for the B12 , and ready for install. The local santa clause parade is Sat night ,and the local snowmobile club will have it in the parade on a trailer!!
Its a night parade with lights on the floats. Should be fun , and i will get pics .
Hope we get some good posts started as it tis the season!!!!

48Bomber I was talking to Glen, (the fellow that's building a bomber from scratch), & he's talking about some kind of in line valve that might work in this case. I will keep an eye on this.
I'm surprised that the people that know & have woody's with power steering haven't helped us out.
48bomber & OT needing to be steered straight....
-
ot,
I have no idea about the power steering in the wood , narrow guage. I hope someone has built one and can help us.
