Wooden Bombardiers / Grfishmaker's '47 rebuild
« on: October 01, 2009, 07:51:34 pm »
A few weeks ago I sent The Old Trucker a few pictures of my machine that I had just started to redo the woodwork on and he quickly informed me that "I was doing it wrong, you are supposed to put it on NT for everyone to see". I know he was right, but I sure hate to agree with a Newfie.
Anyway, I had taken a few pictures as I started, but I see I should have taken a few more. It is so easy to forget the camera and peck away at the job ahead. I have certainly enjoyed following the previous rebuilds that have been posted and found some of them to be such a great reference during my rebuild (especially the old wooden machines). It's always nice to sit back and enjoy (along with the builder) the fruits of their labour.
Back in the latter part of the winter of 2008, I purchased a 1947 wooden narrow from KLM up in The Pas (I've meet alot of nice people on NT). It needed alot of attention, but it was the kind of machine that I had always wanted. I had never ridden in a narrow gauge but had heard alot of stories of their work in the snow (maybe some tall tales) and it only incresed my desire to own one. Originaly my intention was to start on the rebuild in the summer of 2008, but the summer slipped by too fast and before long it was fall and it was left sitting with no work being done. I have no garage to work in so it was going to have to be a fair weather project. So I told myself that this wouldn't happen next year; I would work on it as soon as spring arrived and I'd have it all finished by summer's end and save the fall for hunting. Well back in mid August I realized it was all happening again and I had better get going on it or it would be a repeat of last year. My intention was to get the woodwork done and I could do the rest in the colder weather.

Here she is on her way home from The Pas.

Well you can see from the pictures above that there have been some modifications to her over her 60 years. The newer style windows are a obvious adaption, she has a 292 GM automatic transmission in her, missing her front bumper, missing half of her rear metal framing beside the radiator, the windshield and all side windows are cracked (except the driver and passenger doors), has metal under the skis replacing the wooden runners and the wooden plywood has been redone a few years back.
Who ever owned her back then, had redid her using regular plywood. Naturally that didn't go too well and she showed alot of weather damage to the wood (warpped and rotten) and had alot of spots that silicone was used to try and mend the damaged parts. But like I said before, this was the kind of machine that I would like to have and I knew going in that there would be no shortage of repairs and labour involved in her rebuild.

Body / Windshield
« on: November 23, 2008, 06:28:21 pm »
I have to replace the windshield in my narrow. Any suggestions as to what kind of glass (saftey or plexiglass?) I should use? Also, will most auto glass places cut out any size windshield piece? Any idea as to the price?

This is one of the machines that we seen on the Youtube video from Quebec. The Old Trucker managed to contact the owner by doing some CSI Newfoundland; tracking down the owner by taking the name off of the sign on the bombardiers side.
A beautiful machine for sure. Nice work.
I will let the old trucker tell the story of the owner and the machine.

Body / Modifications to regular body shape
« on: June 01, 2008, 07:00:50 pm »
Here's a couple of pictures of bombardiers that have had some interesting modifications done to their regular body shapes. The pictures are taken off of a video, so the photo quality is lacking but still gives a good example of what some people are doing in the way of body modifications.

These three following picture have a smaller motor cover than the above photo and also a very ingenious rear suspension adaptation. Who needs rims?

Notice only one tire and one sprocket per side.

This machine uses two tires per side.

Drivetrain / Replacing the rear wheels with sliders
« on: May 28, 2008, 10:20:16 am »
There is a video on the internet showing a few bombardiers that have had their rear suspension modified by having the tires removed and replaced with a slider type suspension. One machine has only the sprocket and the one rear tire on it while some of the others use two tires per side. It is a very interesting video and well worth the look. It also shows an old 1939 B7 along with a few other interesting machines. Some have been cut down and used as flat deck type vehicles.
The video was taken in St-Roch-de-Mekinac, Quebec and looks like it is some sort of rally similar to the Cranberry Portage Rally.
I sent a request to the person that posted the video to see if he/she could post it on our NT site and am awaiting a reponse. As the video is from Quebec, we may have a language problem.
If anyone would like to try and view it, here is a few steps that will hopefully help.
1. go the Youtube
2. type bombardier snowmobile in the search box
3. click on one of the bombardier video
4. the one that is posted by fatssoalbert is the good ones. he/she has a few, but the one that is 4:45 minutes long is the good one.
5. if you click on his/her profile, it will show all of his/her posts and there are a feww well worth the look

There will be quite a few different video choices pop up with bombardiers, but the rally ones have some good machines. There is one there that appears to have all mag wheels on the rear suspension, but may just be painted.

Hopefully I will here from fatssolbert and inform us as to the suspension set up and perhaps send us some picture for posting on NT. It would be nice for him/her to join and past along the NT site to whatever club that happens to be out there.
The Quebec event appears to be the same sort as Manitobas with some prttey nice machines.
Good luck and hopefully you will enjoy this as much as I did.

Trail Talk / Lots of snow!
« on: March 30, 2008, 07:59:37 am »
The old trucker says that anyone looking for some extra snow to extend your riding season should head out east. These pictures are of the Trans Labrador Highway, (I believe taken in March 2008), and they were expecting another 40cm the next day.

(I don't think I'll complain about too much snow anymore.)

Does anyone have a windshield wiper motor for sale/rent/borrow or trade? It's for a 47-48 narrow gauge (12 volt); the one that sits above the windshield. Thanks.

Here's an old ashtray from the past for those of you who enjoy a little bombardier memorabilia. Anyone else have anything along this line?

Wanted / Back tail lights
« on: January 23, 2008, 09:59:59 pm »
Does anyone have a pair of the red/chrome tails light assemby for the rear of the older bombadiers for sale? I have a 1953 machine, but I think the lights were prettty standard for many years. Any help or info. is appreciated. I always see the amber clearance lights for sale all over, but nothing in red.
