Wooden Bombardiers / Re: hydraulic drum breaks on each sprocket
« on: August 19, 2010, 10:24:54 pm »
My 1951 operators manual lists hydraulic turning brakes as an option on the wide gauge only.  No other info but that option sure would come in handy at times...like trying to manuever on a concrete floor.

Drivetrain / Re: Tires
« on: August 03, 2010, 07:43:42 am »
The origional tires on my 51 are B F Goodrich 4 ply IMPLEMENT tires.  That may explain the difference in price some of you are experiencing. Implement tires are generally cheaper than automobile tires and the 45mph rating should be sufficient for most machines, certainley for mine... CBD

I put a 190 degree thermostat in my 251, sure helped with the heater output and it hasn't boiled over yet ! I don't use a pressure cap on the rad.

The steering wheel and column are the same as found in Chrysler cars. I would look in a car junkyard for a vehicle of similar age as your bombardier.

The linings on my sprockets are 2 3/4 inches wide and the cleats are  spaced at 3 3/4 inches (center to center) on the belts. I agree that running the tracks too loose could cause broken cleats and of course once the cleats are worn down in the center they lose most of their strength too...  Hard to get a good reading on the thickness of the sprocket lining but mine look to be made out of the tread of a  car tire and about 3/8 in thick. They are the origional linings.  1951 narrow woodie.

Oldsledz, There are likely more than a few of us that would like to hear about the tricks involved in removing and replacing tracks. Maybe you would be kind enough to start a new topic on this subject where we could share our experiences...

V6 or Straight 6 Engines / Re: Engine part No's for 251 cu in Chrysler

Regarding the fuel pump #, there are likely two versions. The origional equipment pump on my machine was equipped with a glass  sediment bowl, and the one I used as a replacement did not have this feature.  I can't imagine being able to empty and replace the bowl anyway, it's almost impossible to  get at, even in a warm shop. But out on the trail ???  I put an inline filter in the fuel line where I can get at it.

General Discussion / Re: How to identify a bombardier
« on: June 26, 2009, 12:31:50 pm »
OT.. Yes my '51 has a dimmer switch. The origional headlight system is pretty dim to begin with,I can't imagine why they thought it necessary to dim them further.... maybe government regulations ??  Options were mentioned in a previous reply, someday I'll get around to posting  a list of all the available options in 1951... there were quite a few...

Wooden Bombardiers / Re: Varnish ? Or Paint?
« on: June 21, 2009, 04:52:18 am »
48 Bomber.. I have a '51 machine and it is varnished with dark red pinstriping. It has never been refinished and although it could use a  coat of varnish I am reluctant to mess with the origional finish.

The veneer on my machine is 1/4 inch - 3 ply. Yes, it is all origional, could use a refinishing job but I am hesitant to tamper with it because it has never been touched and the origional  pinstriping would be lost. What is the general feeling out there, refinish or leave it origional ? It is always shedded when not in use so is protected from the elements.
