General Discussion / Looking for Outside Mirrors
« on: January 14, 2013, 07:13:55 pm »
I am looking to attach a set of rear view mirrors on my 56 wide gauge.   Does anyone have any suggestions as to what type of mirror you would recommend?

General Discussion / First drive of the year
« on: November 20, 2011, 08:33:58 pm »
Well finally got my wide gauge out of storage today.   Not much snow, but there is some.   Installed new shocks, serviced the machine and installed the front wheels for the fist time ever.   Wanted to see how it would drive without the skiis.  Good to have it out on the road again.   SGI used to license this as an Industrial Tracked Vehicle....and when I went to renew it this year they could nto do it.   So after 4 days of going back and forth, SGI says that they now cannot register these machines anymore?   Go figure!!

General Discussion / a foot of new snow
« on: April 30, 2011, 03:22:01 pm »
Well I had plans of putting my Bombardier away tomorrow for the summer.    And last night we rec'd over a foot of wet snow.   Some of my neigbors had 3 ft of snow blocking their roads so they called and I fired up the wide gauge and picked them up and took them into town.   I cannot believe how much snow we rec'd.   And it was so so wet before this and we certainly dont need this now.

General Discussion / Moosomin Museum sno Plane meet
« on: March 06, 2011, 05:54:29 pm »
Well in Moosomin today they had a sno plane meet at Maple Farm Equipment.   The Local museum put on the event.   There were 9 snow planes in total from all over including one from Norht Dakota.    The purppose was to show people the planes plus give them a chance to go for a ride in them.   I took my bombardier and as well there D Evans from Regina showed up with his wide gauge.    I know in my bomb we took over 100 people for a ride.   They were yound and old with many of the more mature generation remebering how they had gone to school in one of these once upon a time.    The weather was great and the day was very good.   Hats off to the museum for organizing a very good event.    Watch local TV and read local media as the event was covered by a host of media.

Well - we finally found the issue with the engine.  We popped one head to check and found a blown head gasket.  So took off the other head to inspect and found a cracked head.  Had lots of fun trying to find a 302 head.   Finally found one that would match and rebuildt them both.   Installed new push rods while we were at it, new plusg, wires, coil, rbuilt the carb and installed electronic ignition.   Walls look good and rings seemed fine.     Went for a spin and wow nice to have 8 cylinders firing now!!    Seems to have lots of power now.   So we are back on the trails

thanks for the info and the offer.   We pulled the heads and as we suspected, the head gasket was shot.   Apparently whomever rebuild this before we got it, never torqued the head bolts.  Some were finger tight???   So the heads are out and off to get planed, and may as well redo valves and seats at the same time.   Should be running hopefully in a couple of days.

Thanks OT and KPM....so what is the easiest way to pull the engine...is there room to pull it rearward by removing the rad etc?   Will it fit through there or do you need to remove it through one of the side doors?

So can a guy do a rebuild in frame or is it easier to pull the engine?   Have never pulled the engine out before, is there a simple way at all to pull this?   or can I access the oil pan from the bottom?

Well...went to tune up the 302...as it was missing a bit and lacked some power.   Changed plugs, then wires, fuel filters and then cleaned the carb.   Thought that would do the trick.  Ran a bit better but not great.  Pulled the plug wires on # 2 and 3 and found they were not firing.  Rotor was ok as was the cap so they were getting spark.  Ran compression on #3 and nothing.   #2 was low...so thought either a broken rocker or I am suspecting a leaking head gasket between these 2 cylinders.  Pulled valve cover and rocker arms are fine.   Tomorrow we will pull the head and see if we are any wiser.   Hope we don't see cylinder detonation.   So much for going for a ride today!!

Hi....so where is your shop Dpaulson?    Ya..just changed fule filters in it and pvc.   Seems to be working a bit better.   I changed it up to an electronic ignition last year as I was tired of points!    Need to change plug wires.

And your 318 you say needs a bit more power when braking trail.   Thats what I am finding.   I think it is simply a weight issue.   Drove accross the scales yesterday and it weighs in at 2150 kgs...

Finally went for a ride today.   Took a couple of newbies for a tour around the city.   I have a Ford 302 in my wide gauge, but seems to be lacking power.   I think my pvc is plugged as seems to be spitting a little oil.   Has anyone installed a new style fule injected engine in a wide gauge yet?   Or any suggestions for which engine would be better.
