It seems as quick as the B-12,  but does not ride as nice.

V6 or Straight 6 Engines / Re: Engine lead additive?
« on: December 22, 2011, 05:53:14 am »
I believe you can used unleaded fuel if you change to stainless steel valves and valve seats.  Lead was more commonly used and a lubricant for the valve train and also the amount of lead in the fuel dictated the flame spread of ignition at the spark plug .  I think the combustion temperatures are hotter in unleaded fuel than in the old leaded fuel.  Valve timing does not change,  but you may play with ignition timing.

Trail Talk / Re: Dates for 2012 St. Raymond Bombardier Rally

The site to got to is www.neigeenfete.com   Me,  being english have to use the google translator to read the site for it is in French.  There is a couple of links to the area hotels -- and there are not many for it is a small town.  I had to get reservations very early to even get a room.  I believe the nearest airport would be Quebec City.    There is a link on the site and you can email them for more information.
It is allot of fun and this past year I think there were about 50+ Bombardiers there.

Actually I was thinking about taking the engine to the So. Cal. hot rod speed shop,  building it up, put 3 2 barrel Stromberg carbs on it and try it at the Bonneville Salt Flats!!

But seriously,  I was at St. Raymond last winter for their annual meet and there was a B7 there that I could not keep up with it the 90 Km ride with my B-12.  It seemed to move right along.  I don't know which is better,  a 3400 lb B-12 with 115 hp or a 2500 lb B-7 with 85 hp.  Any engineers here in the group?

O.T.

I am heading to St. Raymond,  Qc. this weekend.  It is the annual pilgrimage of the the Bombardiers.  Heading out Friday and returning Monday.  Will get some photos.  Last year there were 59 machines.

Use stainless screws.  When you stain the outside,  the stain will tone the finish down a bit and make the screws look old.  Good luck!

Wascana.

I used the  Sikkens log and siding semi stain,  not the Cetol product.  I have had no issues at all so far.  First,  I did a single coat to the interior sides of my plywood,  then did 3 top coats of Benjamin Moore Marine varninsh. Once the plywood was installed,  I sanded the roof and side panels to fit so the edges came out correct.  Then a coat of Sikkens and 3 coats of marine varnish. Finally I had the pin stripes put on (painted-not decal).  The painter that did the job suggested after a year or 2 we should pull the metal doors off and apply another coat or 2 of varnish.  I plan to do that this summer.  The reason is that it really is treated sort of like a boat,  so this is just a "maintainence" coat.

Bear in mind that you can change the tone by heavy you apply it.  I brushed it on and then used a rag to get it consistant.  Play with it on a sample board first.  AND I am sure that there are better ways to do this, but I am very happly with mine.

Good luck.

rattleman,

Old trucker is right,  you should be able to get a choke cable at a place that works on big trucks or a truck body company.  I got them for my old Snow Travelers and one of them is 8' long and they can do longer ones too.   Good luck.

Marc,

What year is your B12?  If it is a 48 and you can't find the interior handles,  I have a source for the reproductions.

The manifold still looks pretty good and the body still looks as good as when I finished it.  I do keep it in a heated garage when not in use so everything dries out.  The engine temp holds perfect. I do adjust the rear door and watch the temp gauage.  Anything different??  I don't know.  Pretty satisfied with it.
Headed for camp with the machine tomorrow for the week end so I should put  50 to 60 miles on it.  Went for a quick ride last night to double check my track tension (8 miles) and it goes great. So with that being said,  I will pack every tool that I have,  a couple of tow straps and my winter clothes just in case!

Have a Happy New Year and we should see yours on the snow in 2011!
